Conscious musings— The Observer Perspective

Televisions. Some are old and rustic, some are sleek and some sexy. Some have wrinkled surfaces, while some are still with their plastic wraps on. Some with broken screens, some with broken speakers. Some smart, some not so much. Some black, some brown and maybe some white and yellow too! Some broken lying in the trash, while some still fresh within their warranty period. Doesn’t the same hold for humans in general?

If you entertain this perspective and take it a step further, there is also an observer watching the show right? That would be the curious experimenter in each of us learning about this world and interacting with it thru the TV instruments called our bodies.

I clearly remember going to a superhero movie as a kid and coming out walking with my chest puffed convinced I am superman! I also remember the time when I tightly closed my eyes and ears trying hard not to pee my pants when a terrifying crime is unfolding on the same screen. Through all of this I clearly remember the enlightening moment when it clicked to me that this is just a show after all. After that realization, I always knew I could choose to simply remind myself that none of it is real whenever I am unable to take it anymore!

Why is it so hard to believe the same about the show this body is observing in “real-life”? Why don’t most of us have that enlightening moment sustained? Why do we want to control the narrative of the show? Why why why?! Well, that is because this movie called life was created by no mere mortal. It was made exclusively for our viewership by none other than God itself! He deserves some Oscars — all of them. Doesn’t he?

God wins all the Oscars this year. Screw you Christopher Nolan.

The splashing rivers, the beautifully sculpted mountains, the fierce oceans, the seductive fumes of an incense, the delicate flowers, the irresistible pull of Scarlett Johansson’s butt, her smile, her blue eyes, I digress goddamnit you sneaky God! You put in so much attention to detail trying to seduce me into believing this show of yours!

I get it! Life is nothing but a show. What now? Remember, you are the observer behind the instrument and not the instrument itself. Being an observer, sharpening your observational skills is your fundamental duty. Associating with the observer also gives us the power to watch the show with equanimity. It gives us the perspective to marvel at the creation in its most beautiful and even in its most gut wrenching moments.

What to do with the “TV” itself? Just the usual stuff you do with your TV at home. Keep the TV clean and healthy for as long as you can. While your TV might have a limited number of channels, life has infinite channels to tune in. Enjoy all of them! Indulge in some humor, some drama, some horror, some cartoons and most importantly some don’t forget Baywatch! Of course, it goes without saying, do not spend your life obsessing over just one channel like your smartphone! Eventually, when the show gets bad, would you take your frustration out on the TV? Same applies with life, take the show as is, no need to hurt ourselves intentionally when life is unbearable.

And finally, what happens when the TV breaks? Fret not, consciousness (the observer) goes on. And if you associate with the observer, you go on too! No need to build a massive statue for your previous TV. And if you believe in rebirth, you just buy a brand new Television set. Maybe this time, you get a smart TV with a Netflix subscription.

And as Alan Watts quotes:

Relax! Its all a show. — Alan Watts
